The Penang Island today is an important tourist destination, one of the best of Malaysia in reality. It is located on the northwest coast of the peninsula of Malaysia and surrounded by the Straits of Malacca. Capital of Penang called Georgetown. Penang State comprises the island of Penang (293 square kilometres) and province Wellesley (760 square kilometres, today called Seberang PRAI in Malay), located in the continental part of the peninsula of Malaysia. While Seberang PRAI is two and a half times larger that the island of Penang in size, its population (54%) is only slightly more than that of the island.
The name "Penang" yes same comes from the shape (Penang by virtue of the British until 1957) colonial pronounce the original name of the island, Pulau Pinang Malay. Today the locals still call Penang to speak in English, although it is possible that the island is known outside of the English speaking world, and appear on maps as "Pinang".
The sea, which consists of the canal of the North and the South canal separates the island of Penang Prai Seberang. These two halves of Penang are connected by the bridge in long Penang 8 miles (13.4 km), the longest in Malaysia bridge and one of the most long in Asia. Since its completion more than twenty years ago, the Penang Bridge has been volume exceeding capacity, resulting in regular traffic jams and need a second bridge of Penang, even more than the current planning. This second bridge connect one day Batu Maung on the island and Batu Kawan on the continent.
Used by citizen of Penang common languages are English, Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, Hokkien and Teochew. It is a truly wonderful and surprising journey while visiting Penang. Penang surrounded by its attractive whitewashed colonial buildings along with gleaming temples, mosques, churches, labyrinthine alleys and all sites where the majority of tourists who come to visit.
